Using a laptop during a meeting can distract the audience’s attention because of its noise. In this case, turning off your laptop sound by changing its sound scheme seems to be a pretty good idea, but not if you find yourself enabling the sound back oftentimes. The sound scheme can be changed easily, but I found that getting back to the Sound option in Windows over and over again is quite bothering to me. Auto Mute is a third-party app designed to automatically mute laptop sound on some events such as login, logoff, sleep, suspend and shutdown.
Auto Mute is a portable app that supports Windows and Mac. Even though the app is initially intended for laptop, it can be used on PC as well. What I like the most from this software, beside its auto mute ability, is that you can mute and unmute sound with a customizable keyboard shortcut. The program lets you select which sound to be disabled and your preferred sound scheme will be activated instantly. The sound will stay mute until you manually unmute it by pressing the shortcut key.

The program sits on tray during its operation. Simply right-click on its tray icon and click the Setting option to display the main window of the program. Then you can change the default settings according to your need. I tested the program by checking the “if computer has been locked” and then lock the screen by pressing Win + L. I didn’t hear the usual sound so it means the sound scheme is immediately activated without having to press a Save or Activate button whatsoever.
Just a simple note. Clicking the close button doesn’t exit the program. It can be terminated by right-clicking on its tray icon and click the Close option.
I also found out that you can mute sound by double-clicking the program’s icon on the tray.
Auto Mute is a free application that works with Windows and Mac. For Windows, it supports Windows 7, Vista and XP. For Mac, it supports Mac OS X v10.5 or later. The download size for the installer is 549.19 KB for Windows and 152.20 for Mac.
